Trainer Experience Questions:

Why have you become a trainer:

About ten years ago, I became seriously ill and lost control of my health. I felt powerless because I did not have the energy to exercise and be the husband and father I wanted to be. I made up my mind that I would do everything in my power to not lose that control again. I also felt a strong desire to help others avoid negative health issues and "Take Back Control" the way that I had. That is why I became a personal trainer.

What in your opinion is the biggest mistake people make while working out:

Without a doubt, the biggest mistake people make is going at training with too much enthusiasm too fast with too much intensity. Most of my clients are older adults who are non-athletes. My philosophy is to work with the client regularly using medium intensity with the proper recuperation so the client builds energy and stamina. High intensity workouts, for the average non-athlete, lead to burn-out, injury and discouragement with physical activity altogether.

Please describe how you would train a 45 year old male with type II diabetes in order to lose weight:

The main role of exercise in losing weight is to speed metabolism and burn calories. I would encourage this client to eat sensibly and do at least 30 minutes of cardio exercise 5-6 days per week. Resistance training (2-3 times per week) would focus on core exercises using medium intensity for 12-20 repetitions per set. I would also educate the client about the serious health risks they are facing with the advancement of Type II diabetes and encourage them to consult with a lifestyle coach.
