Trainer Experience Questions:

What is your training style:

I prefer "functional training" in that I train each individual based on their desired results. Functional training to an athlete and functional training to a 70 year old with a joint replacement are two different things. I like to push people beyond what they think or what they have been told their limits are, but in a safe, reasonable way. I believe my training style differs from the majority of personal trainers in that I don't necessarily just train body parts, I train the body as a whole.

What in your opinion is the biggest mistake people make while working out:

There are really two big mistakes that people make when designing their own workout. The first is "frequency". Most people I see split their muscle groups up and by doing that do each muscle group once (some twice) per week. Many times that is not the most efficient way to train...especially if you're paying a trainer to train you 2-3 days/week. The second big mistake is not using the correct "load". Most people (females in particular) don't use the correct % of their 1RM to build strength.

Describe your own workout program:

My own workout program consists of an "undulating periodization" scheme. That simply means that I vary the volume, load, and intensity within each week rather than stick to the same workout for weeks or months at a time. I also vary exercises from one workout to the next and I use various modalities throughout the week as well. This stresses the body in a unique manner so that it cannot easily adapt and get used to the workout. It's also a fun, challenging way to keep the workouts exciting.
