Why have you become a trainer:I got interested in becoming a certified personal trainer after years of practicing physical therapy. It seemed only natural to me to want to expand my education into the field of wellness as I saw my rehab patients being discharged from therapy only to come back for therapy with the same problems over and over again. Many of my clients are post rehab and are dedicated to injury prevention and ongoing wellness and maintenance.
What in your opinion is the biggest mistake people make while working out:Personally I believe that most people are at risk of injury when they workout unless they have someone professionally trained guiding them. This is especially true for older clients, post rehab clients, and clients whose physical problems require exercise modifications for safety. When a client has physical limitations, the "no-pain-no-gain" approach isn't a safe method of training. Each client deserves and should demand individualized training programs based on their needs and limitations.
Describe a particularly challenging client you have trained:I trained a client with post-polio syndrome. His main reason for seeking a trainer was his fear of falling. He was unable to walk without the aid of forearm crutches. Our training sessions were ever-changing and based on the severity of his symptoms. Our goal was to build core and upper body strength to compensate for paralysis in his lower extremities. We also focused on balance, endurance and breathing exercises. Every individual should have the chance to increase their quality of life!!
