My Introduction:

Please describe how you would train a 45 year old male with type II diabetes in order to lose weight?

Because type 2 diabetes is the result of being inactive and overweight, I would encourage regular moderate exercise and becoming selective with foods in his diet. I would teach techniques for good blood sugar control -- before, during, and after exercise for heart health. Appropriate target heart rate zone should be achieved. Weight training is important. With regular exercise and proper nutrition, diabetics can reduce or even eliminate their need for diabetes-related and blood pressure medication.

In general, please describe your experience?

Mostly, I work with cardiac rehab clients -- people who have had a heart attack, bypass surgery, or other cardiac conditions. Many struggle with diabetes, obesity, and high blood pressure and are anxious about exercise. I give them reassurance, guidance, education, and instruction about exercise and nutrition, and they become confident in their daily living and empowered with these new skills to improve the quality of their lives and the lives of their family members.

How would you help an overweight client lose weight?

Permanent weight loss can be achieved with regular exercise and proper nutrition. I would encourage increased and unlimited consumption of plant foods (vegetables, fruits, grains, beans) and discourage animal products (meats, eggs, dairy). These are the high calorie foods. Weight loss is especially dependent on type and intensity of exercise: therefore, client would use specific machines at proper heart rates. I would encourage exercise on most days of the week. Weight training is important.
